CT60 Fix - Very Strange
Posted by: Crash May,29.2010-08:30

Greetings,

The fresh, new NVRAM/Clock ICs arrived today. I got the Maxim/Dallas DS12887A model sent out as an engineering sample. I installed an appropriate socket, inserted the IC, then started the computer. I tried to use the special key combination to clear the NVRAM, but do not know if this worked. I put the RESETNVR.PRG in my auto folder as the first program, and after reboot the OS was in German so I think it did its job. I then used Bootconf to make some changes like language, keyboard, and starting resolution, and CLOCK.CPX to set the date and time

After trying the computer in CT60 mode, nothing has changed. I tried to re-flash the ABE and SDR with the CT60 disconnected from the expansion ports, then shut down and replaced the CT60. Still only a black screen. The 66mhz oscillator is still in place, so the CTCM or divider should not be an issue.

I then tried flashing ABE and SDR with a PC and the Impact software, but there was no difference. As before, the computer would not boot, even in 030 mode, unless I erased the SDR. So, I erased the SDR, and decided to try flashing again with the Falcon.

After doing this, the Falcon would still not boot, but I tried switching the cable back to the PC to verify and see if there was anything different. Here is the surprise.

After I did a verify from the PC, while the SDR was still programmed, the Falcon booted on its own. I was able to replicate this several times, and have no idea what could cause this.

Then, I decided to take the 030 mode jumper off, and try the same trick to boot the 060 - no luck. Just for the sake of it, I removed the boost disable jumper too, in case this could make any difference. Presto, this time the CT60 boots!

So, now the CT60 only works with bus speeder enabled.

I ran some tests, and the computer seems to be working properly - so I reluctantly shut it down. It will not start again unless I verify the SDR again from the PC. I test 030 mode with the bus speeder disabled, and the same thing happens - the computer will not start unless I do an SDR verify from the PC.

So, can anyone suggest what on earth could possibly cause this computer to only boot when the PC Xilinx software does a verify on the SDR?

Also, the computer will not boot properly using the CTCM. I get only the first Super Booster boot picture, then a white screen with the text part of the boot screen that says:

ATARI FALCON/CT60 TOS4.04
68060 Rev.6 Mask E41J

There is no Atari logo, and the boot process does not continue. This used to happen fairly often, so I would use the reset button which would allow a correct boot, but reset does not help in this case.

To summarize, the computer will boot under the following conditions:

In 030 mode

1. Bus speeder disabled
2. Immediately after an SDR verify command is sent from PC Impact software connected to JTAG cable

or

1. SDR is left erased

In 060 mode

1. Bus speeder enabled
2. 66mhz oscillator but _not_ CTCM
3. Immediately after an SDR verify command is sent from PC Impact software connected to JTAG cable

Ideas?

Thank you for your consideration
