Hi !

Well after tests with 12 modules, i can confirm that the Agony intro mod is the worst case.
Even with 64 buffers the average high does not go below 38.34% CPU at 50 KHz and 31.02% CPU at 25 KHz.
In average, 64 buffers(64000 bytes at 25 KHz and 128000 bytes at 50 KHz) will save almost 7% CPU comparing the maximum high peak usage with normal play. But the results are different from mod to mod with almost 10% for CreamOfTheEarth and only about 4% for AKidIsBorn, two Amiga classics. Savings are similar at 25 KHz and 50 KHz but and bit bigger at 50 KHz.
I also tested the Illusion.mod from Chromix with several number of buffers: 64, 32, 16 and 8.
The savings results were 6.98, 6.12, 5.34 and 4.52 with 25 KHz and 8.52, 7.50, 6.63 and 5.42.
This means that most of the gains come from the delaying of the Protracker mod handler reading new notes. As you may know for one of the ticks, it reads the new notes and sample data and for the next ones it only updates the effects. The number of next ones depends on the speed which is normally at 6 or 7.
Only a small part of the gain comes from delaying a note combination as the gain progress relative to the power of 2 of used buffers is nearly linear.
In conclusion, this technique with this kind of buffer size will not allow to get a CPU usage close to the average for the whole mod replay but will only reduce a little bit the CPU usage peaks.
