Lance's routine uses the Microwire to include the samples volume control in a very non linear way. This is speedy but not accurate.
So the answer is that during replay, both registers will be constantly changed. Any change you do will be overwritten by the replayer.
That is one of the prices for 50 KHz at 30%/40% CPU ...

Due to nature of its original design for STF, Hextracker has an internal amplifier table that allows you to do just that by modifying the Volume / Quality parameter. This table will distribute the mixing possibilities over the 8 bit DAC values. There is an ideal value that the program can calculate to obtain maximum volume without cuts. That value is different in Mono and Stereo.
But in the replay, the user can force another value of VQ.
If you are interested, you can check the Hextracker package and its replay source and manual but it will cost you around 80% CPU at 50 KHz in Stereo for an STE ...
