Hi,
Since the Radeon sucks quite a bit of power (about as much as Falcon+ct63, depending on Radeon model), the few strands might be not enough.
Its possible you have a bit voltage drop there, which affects signal strenght directly.
The connector does require a bit of force to open up, agreed, but it does open wide enough to even stick a 1.5mm˛ wire (which would be thicker than the usual PC's power supply wires). Perhaps you apply the force in wrong direction?
You can also solder the wire directly to the connector's solderpad on the bottom side of the PCI daughterboard. This would ensure 3,3V level is good.
