Personally I think _if_ we should have a virtual machine (which seems more and more like the only way _if_ we want faster atari clones), then we should use the work from aranym. Some people don't like the attitude of the aranym developers; but hey their work is gpl and it can be forked.
Aranyms way of talking to hardware is thru a linux kernel. Some people doesn't like this, even if they wouldn't see one pixel of linux boot or anywhere else.
Doing it like this has some clear advantages; drivers! For nearly any network card, any graphics card, any sound card etc. On the atari side, the actual hardware doesn't matter, the aranym layer makes the translation from linux-driver to atari access.
Let's say we could get a "falcon compatible pci-board" with a supervidel, 56001 and audio subsystem, then we could perhaps speak of a falcon-compatible virtual clone (phu, strange names ;-)).
The hardware around this falcon-pci card could be any pc, mac or other machine with pci.
But as aranym is not yet ready for this 100% customized linux boot nor is the super videl, then I wonder if the time is right for a clone that a) won't be falcon compatible b) need huge software work made from scratch c) need a whole motherboard designed from scratch d) possibly quite expensive..
If we wait a year for aranym to grow mature and supervidel to appear... maybe a falcon pci-card + aranym would be better?
Ok I'm rambling here, just some thoughts..
