>No offense taken Peter. My problem is this. For me there is a TON of unknowns.
Sure. Everyone here felt the same at one time or another. Lots of choices, no
or little documentation, everyone saying 'use this', or 'no use this'. When
under fire like that, people tend to just stick with what they know. In most
cases it was Magic, or just plain TOS.
>One being the fact that ok is it safe to dual boot MINT and Magic from the same
AFAIK. I can't think of a reason why not. In fact when I tried Magic out a few
years ago, I had this situation, and didn't suffer any problems. Except one.
There were so many auto folder programs, and accessories on my drive I didn't know
which program was for what. I was confused as hell, and didn't enjoy my
experience. Eventually I saw no advantage to having (and paying for) Magic so I
dumped it. Until 5 days ago I still had things like magxsnd on my filesystem. And
I STILL don't know what thats for. (I did a clean install of MiNT from easymint
v1.63 onto a 1Gb Compact Flash Card. Now I have a sweet almost silent CT60 setup).
>Hard Drive?? What is the best boot manager that is compatible with the CT60??
>At one time I used XBoot but I believe that one does not work well with the
Xboot works great. With one caveat. You cannot create or rename sets with the
CT60 active. You have to switch to 030 mode first, otherwise 'boom'.
>CT60. OK once all of that is sorted out, just how easy is it to get MINT setup??
Piece of cake now. Easymint 1.63 is almost a no-brainer install.
>What is the best Distribution and Desktop?? I like Jinnee as I have used that as
There is really only one distribution that is still developed today that I know of.
SpareMiNT. EasyMint is also 'technically' a distribution, but I really prefer to
think of it as a SpareMiNT installer. If you download the latest EasyMint 'distro'
without the X11 package (~95Mb in total) you have virtually everything you need
including XaAES and Teradesk. Of course you have Jinnee already, and you can
continue to use that instead of Teradesk if you wish.
>long as Magic. Then you have to choose the AES as well. You have XaAES, MyAES
>and there was a new one coming out I believe from Odd S. called Oaes i believe.
No disrespect to MyAES, but XaAES is part of Sparemint now, and is even a kernel
module. Although you could use Na_AES, MyAES, or even the AES that exists in TOS
4, you probably should stick with XaAES.
>This is all confusing. Then if you get all of that to work then you still have
>to fine tune it and get the network working and everything else. Just a lot of
Tuning? No, maybe you need to get your centscreen set up, and maybe check the
config files for completeness, but theres nothing really to do. With the
Easymint 1.63 installer it even sets your network config files up after the
install for you. You just give it Hostname, IP, Gateway and DNS addresses. The
most you will have to do is drop the XIF driver for your network card into the
Mint directory.
>work. And I still have to mount my CT60 and all of its peripherals inside of a

That's big. I went down that road before going to a rackmount case, then deciding
it was just plain ugly, and went back to the original F030 case. Only possible
because I got rid of the 3.5" HD and replaced it with a Compact Flash card. Only
thing is that it will pain me to cut holes in the case to accomodate the 2 USB
ports from the EtherNat, and mount new switches for the power and mode selector.

If you have partitioned your drive into several partitions already and you can wipe
one for MiNT, then all you will need to do, is pick a partition for the unix, clean
it off (save what you want to keep to somewhere else), start HDDRUTIL.app and select
'Harddisk','Change Partition Type', Select the drive, then the partition number
(count from C=0, D=1 etc) and change the partition ID to 'LNX'. Then when you run the
Easymint installer, it will see your LNX partition and it will use that for the unix
filesystem.
If you don't want a unix filesystem then it's still possible, because all you will
have is another directory on your C drive called MINT, and the executable in the auto
folder. You will use a boot selector (like the previously mentioned Xboot) to switch
between the two systems. There ARE other boot selectors that DO work with the CT60,
but I continue to use Xboot, cos I like it. I don't run a system like this (although
I did try the AFROS disk image from Aranym, which is set up like this (1 disk install)).
I'm sure others here can add to this. I have wrist ache now, so I'm gonna go get a
cuppa tea :-)

What's the anti-troll code? That's your personal code to be able to add comments and messages on the dhs.nu site.
Don't have a code or forgot it? Fix it here.
