Crash, what you mention about driver support for USB is important, and I feel another reason why I'm not excited about PCI. The USB of the EtherNAT will only be truly useful if we can get people pulling in the same direction to build up a decent library of drivers for the devices that USB allows to be connected. With PCI as well, the drive to create drivers will be split between them, so both will have less support, instead of one well supported system, we'd have two poorly supported ones.
Paralell and external SCSI, and even PS2, are both becoming less supported now by new devices. To keep the Atari platform useful, the EtherNAT USB has to work, not just hardware wise, but support wise as well. The users need to support it by being willing to put their money where their mouth is, and the developers amongst us need to put finger to keyboard and creater the drivers to make it, and the Atari platform itself, survive the next series of hardware standards.
