About the Eclipse; A PCI bridge not capable of PCI DMA is a dead end. Nothing can be used without DMA. In addition to this, the way it had to be addressed made it totally unusable in my opinion.
About drivers/docs; There are loads of documentation / sources of quite recent cards on the net. Just had a look into the Linux source tree, plenty of stuff to borrow. I'm not so sure 3d docs is totally unavailable. One may perhaps read sourcecode instead of normal documentation, but if Linux can use it, so can we. Will the SV have 3D hardware stuff?
About compatibility; If you dont even want to use the PMMU, but use the snopping sceme mentioned, to remap the Videl registers, I agree with whats being said here. Keeping 100% compatibility with regards to H/Vbl ints, not changing one instruction of the Falcons ROM is impossible. Btw, how was TOS changed to work with CT60? I imagine that this took more patches than it would take to put in code for SV-on-PCI.
I am no hardware expert, I just thought using off the shelf PCI interface chips to bring PCI connectivity to SV would be easier than developing your own PCI interface. I dont even know if this is correct ;)
Fitting a PCI bridge inside the original Falcon case wont work, so if you dont want hardware that cannot fit without recasing, I agreee, PCI bridge is not for you. And if a PCI bridge only have one slot, I'd get pissed ;-) There's a number of cards that a CT60 falcon could benefit from. Even IDE/SCSII cards would greatly enhance its performance.
But what I think is this;
If the SV will be 100% compatible with the Falcon's VDI in ROM (and then NVDI's Videl drivers), I agree on keeping SV as is. However, if you find that you need just "one patch here" or "a little fix there" to make it work, you've already lost the goal, compatibility.
Nature: Just out of curiosity, how many SV orders do you have, and how long to you think it may take for it to "hit the streets"?
I really do like the SV bandwidth numbers, tho ;-)
