I did the reset mod as well as the other mods Rodolphe recommends. The reset issue was improved, although not 100% fixed. In any case, the computer was running well with the mods installed, until it started acting up as described in my original post.
Thanks for everyone's efforts so far! Keep the ideas flowing, please!
