Im a firm believer that people should do as they please, and therfore can only reflect upon our intricacies about how we go about the subject matter.
Considering you propose it to a general level; I think people should do whatever they please. If the contributors of the production and the organizer reach to an agreement that works for them, thats fine with me.
As a general rule of thumb, I believe that releasing something is better than releasing nothing (DOH!). But the comparison between releasing something directly to releasing something later depends on many factors. As to such, I think its best that IF the issue is raised with regards to releasing a final, there is some understanding about whats going to happen; in order to prevent demos after being presented at a party never seeing the light of day in the rest of the community.
As such, I think its nice to get to a good level of agreement; where the organizer still has the possibility to release the party version, in case the situation arises that the demo would otherwise not see the light of day. In our specific case, we agreed with evl something along the terms of `within a month or so'; which is precisely vague enough to keep everyone in suspense :).
