Do you want to do music or just sound effects?
If sound effects I would start by programming the YM directly.
You need to update the soundchip every 50Hz or so, you can trigger the changes on the VBL.
If music, then by all means use a tracker to write the song, and then you can playback in SNDH format. Theres a few example codes around to look at.
