No porting is needed. It's "just" a matter of writing a device driver.
The drivers don't need any specific knowledge to be able to draw whatever the engine (or a module for it, which I intend to turn the FreeType engine into since it makes the fVDI executable five times larger than before) can do.
Text, for example, is usually done in an internal buffer in the engine from which the driver is then told to do a mono-expand blit (the equivalent of vrt_cpyfm). There is a driver "API" for accelerated text drawing as well, but that is currently only used by the RageII driver (and then only for 6 and 8 pixel wide fonts).
