Another successfull CTPCI run!
Posted by: mikro Apr,15.2010-23:00

Hi everybody,

today I've received Radeon 7000 from Alfa Computer. I've bought the most stupid one since I didn't want to loose time with waiting / searching for some super-duper model, it basically doesn't matter what Radeon you have.

Just to give you a picture how things look in the beginning, in its alpha state (you will have eventually bigger respect when you receive yours in more polished version ;) ... currently I use ABE/SDR 7A, CTPCI 1A, TOS 1.04a.

1. Booting takes incredible long time due to x86 emulator, I think in the future will be more plausible to cache translated code (on disk for example) and run that or something similar (maybe ripping whole functionality of that BIOS and rewriting it into native/fast m68k code). On my 66 MHz it takes sometimes 40 seconds to initialize, nearly unusable for normal work.

2. That x86emu seems to hang after some reboots, at least I think so, imagine waiting 40 seconds and nothing has happened, I simply lost my patience and switched off whole computer, after power on it seems quite reliable.

3. XaAES from EasyMiNT (without NVDI and Ethernat, see another thread) is quite challenging to get working, at least my default setup (640x480/256) has made quite a headache for Radeon, screen was flashing and XaAES refused to start Teradesk. I must play with it a little (but it's quite hard, see 1. and 2.) since Beetle and Sqward clearly managed to get XaAES at least running for some time.

4. That driver somehow failed to detect 1920x1080 (HD) resolution, I'm forced to run in 1600x960 :(

5. I really don't like that 3.3V restriction and even more, that 3.3V cable, IMHO it's quite big design flaw. Maybe some revised PCI board will be possible in a future? With both 3.3V and 5V input and universal PCI slots? My current PSU lacks 3.3V so I had to dig for old PSU with both 3.3V and 5V and separate one wire with 3.3V from it ...

6. 80-wire cables (IDE cables) between CTPCI and PCI card aren't very user-friendly either. Not only you must cripple original PSU connector on motherboard, it's also very hard to "hide" those cables under CT60 as that cables conflict with CT60 connector by 2-3 mmm -- one must somehow screw that cables, not very easy, I gave up and let cables "fly" from other (right) side

So, that's it for now, don't take this post as "CTPCI is shit", it really isn't, it just needs to mature, hopefully also with my help we'll get at least that software part better.
