CT60+SV+EtherNat continued

This is an update of the "Super Videl in original case" thread.

We have now been experimenting and thinking about this problem for two weeks. First we made two extender boards for moving the CT60 backwards. These add 4-5mm to the total height of the CT60+boards even though we use low profile connectors.

The height of a SuperVidel + EtherNat is about the same as a 34mm SDRAM DIMM plus its DIMM connector (=39mm). Without our extender boards, the DIMM and SV+Ethernat just barely touches the ceiling of the plastic case. This makes it impossible to add any more height, which our extender boards inevitably do. So we think this is a dead end.

Then we started thinking about other solutions like making an extender board for the CT60 expansion bus instead, which would move the CT60 expansion slots into the area to the right of the CT60. This is where the harddrive is today. It is more risky to extend the 100MHz CT60 bus than the 16/25MHz falcon bus, but we thought the extra 0.5ns of signal trace delays would be bearable.

The extension board would put the connectors more towards the back of the computer, so the SV+ethernat wouldn't be in the way of the keyboard. At first we thought this would be a quite feasible solution, but then we realised that the space left for a 2.5" harddrive between the floppy drive and our extension board would be too small. Also, the total height of such a solution is questionable. Some sort of height addition would be made by the extension board, and as we said before, there isn't any space left above the SDRAM DIMM at all.

Both the proposed solutions assume that you shouldn't need to do any soldering. But we now feel that we have to abandon that ideal, since all possible extension boards add height. So we started to look for things in the stackup that are "unnecessary". The CT60 motherboard socket connectors are unnecessarily tall (9mm), since there is around 4 mm space between the CT60 PCB and any component on the motherboard below it.

Our idea is to remove these socket connectors, and replace them with a modfied version of our first extension boards. These have 5mm socket connectors facing down and very short header connectors facing up. The header connectors will go through the current socket connector holes in the CT60 and soldered in place. This way we have effectively moved the CT60 back 35mm, but not raised it.

We will test this theory during the coming week or the next.
Please tell us here if you have any other ideas of how to solve this problem...

Of course we realise that this method requires all people who want to fit a CT60+SV+Ethernat inside the original case with the keyboard, to do some modifications to their CT60 which they might not see as trivial at all. The soldering itself is quite easy, since the connectors are 2.54mm pitch. But it might still be tricky for a complete novice, and you may be afraid of damaging your CT60.

Not all people know someone who can solder either, so we think of some way to help you with this.
