Now I've made more changes and tests.
First up
- changed nvram
- added a 47ohm resistor for dma
Result: The NVRAM works fine again, nice to have correct time :) However there is some major issue, when I move around windows in TOS or XaAES there is graphics clutter spreading around.
Second try
- cleaned the motherboard carefully
Result: Identical to above
Third try
- moved IDE cable and harddisk from my other Falcon (in a tower)
Result: Got ST-RAM test errors at bootup! What? This thing works 100% in the other falcon :)
Fourth try
- changed to 4MB Atari board
Result: The same thing as above, still ST-RAM errors
Fifth try
- cut the IDE cable down to 20mm
Result: The ST-RAM now tests OK, but the graphics clutter in TOS and XaAES still remains (and yes I use NVDI of course)
Sixth try (getting boring now)
- remove the 47ohm resistor
Result: No more graphics clutter!! No ST-RAM error. No sporadic crashes (yet).
Conclusion (if the crashes continue to keep away):
1. I would probably have been fine by just shortening the IDE cable to 20mm.
2. Different motherboards certainly behave differently on IDE cable length!
3. The 47ohm resistor patch is not a "sure thing" to add for all motherboards
Now I just cross my fingers (and toes) that it will run stable for a few days to verify that it really works OK.
