Floats all the time. As you say, fixed point numbers require shifting etc, the FPU can beat that very easily. Plus it's not theory, the FPU unit does overlap with the integer unit, so you can really do three parallel operations at once.
For instance, Kalms' rendering code is FP most of the time. And it's slow Amiga! :)
I wouldn't rely on gcc very much, I have never tested it but I seriously doubt it has support for this kind of parallelism.
