IIRC timer A (used by the player) has higher priority than VBL, this means you should mask out timer A for a while in your $70.w rout. this blocks the IRQ until you unmask it. you can use an MFP (IMRA IIRC) register for this.
i also think you can set the IPL to 6 or 7 in the SR, but i'm not sure. (really long time ago for me)
