the question is: on what platform do you want to do this. if you consider a modern platform.. even a gameboy has got much more power than an ST.. and on the PC you could easily do a million dots around all 3 axii. the good news is.. on PC you don't actually need to know any 3d math for rotations/perspective.. your preferred 3d rendering pipeline/engine will do it for you..
the trick will more be describing the sound->dot displacement mapping.. you could use each dotball 'slice' as a scope, displaying the soundwave.. the top of the ball would contain the latest scope values, and the lower the slice gets the older the scope values.. this way: a soundscape would appear to move along your ball.. i hope this is what you mean..
