i have no idea what "software compatible" would mean in rel life, but i doubt it is possible to replace YM2149 with YM2203 and still have compability with all music already made for YM2149.

And to get support for an 2149 to 2203 upgrade it really must be 100% compatible with old music, otherwise i dont think people would do this "upgrade".
AY8930 is probably the only solution for an soundchip replacement modification.

i am for an external soundmodule upgrade for the ST (like cartridge), using some cool oldskool synthesizer soundchip... YM2151 maybe ;-)
