Hi Havoc,
I understand you point that any new hardware platform may fragment the already fragmented Atari scene even more. But please let me explain my personal stance.
A big part of my motivation behind creating demos was always the thrill to explore new frontiers and find creative and clever ways to exploit the available hardware facilities. Beside being part of the wonderful Atari community, this technical challenge was driving me. On the Falcon, however, this motivation weared out after I managed to let the DSP do what I wanted. The CT60 has not managed to re-ignite this dedication at all for a simple reason: it makes the Atari faster but does not introduce new and unknown frontiers. In contrast, with the FPGA, I see a host of new challenges and possibilities. It does not make things just easier (if I wanted comfort, I would program effects on a PC), it rewards cleverness. The fact that its quite hard to utilize is not a downer but it stimulates my motivation.
I also see another point in the ACP compared to Atari. The original Ataris tend to become more and more a retro item. I have never seen Atari as "retro". For me, the Atari Falcon is a symbol for innovation. Labeling Atari computers as "retro" or "nostalgic" looks to me like an imprint of a gravestone, and our community tends to put itself into the "retro corner" of the demo scene. I would prefer to be associated with innovation (looking forward) rather than with retro (looking backward with a tear in the eye). The ACP computer is a chance to innovate. FPGAs are bleeding-edge technology and at this point, no one really knows what's possible. I can imagine that by combining this technology with the Atari spirit, amazing things could happen. When I look at Fredi and Mathias, the Atari spirit is very much alive within the ACP project. These guys are driven by dedication rather than monetary profit. Magically and maybe irrationally, this attracts people - like me. :-)
Cheers
Norman
