What resolution would you suggest that the Atari is capable of playing smoothly?

I think that I tried converting to an AVI, but this reduced the colors to 256 :/

Is this a bus bandwidth issue? I can't understand why the CPU remains untaxed. The documentation for Aniplay says that the sound will loop if the CPU is overloaded, but that isn't the case here.
