I've played around with it some and it does work, but Aniplayer is much easier to use (for me anyway). I didn't notice performance differences, but I was mainly trying to see if I could play a DVD using mplayer. I was not successful. One interesting thing I found was that I could play a .wmv file (sound only, no video) with mplayer.

I have some Atari commercial clips that I can play with Aniplayer that actually play very well, sound and all, but they were obviously formatted for playing in a small window.
