The resolution to use is described in the XaAES.cnf file. For example a resolution of 640x480x256 is IIRC
video=27
The default is to use the resolution preset in the NVRAM. Now I suspect that you are using centscreen or the like. In that case you need to match the resolution setiing in the xaaes.cnf with that of your centscreens preset, but since I am not using such software I can't say anything more.
