Depends on what devices you are going to connect, but the best way if you are connectiong high current devices is through a opto-coupler.
Inside is a ir-led that needs a small amount of current to let the gate on the other side to open.
Also see this wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opto-isolator.
Get a breadboard, some optocouplers and start experimenting :)
