I did not get to try anything when I got home last night (sorry), went straight to bed.

I would say try setting SDL_VIDEODRIVER to xbios and see if you get a different result. You can change that either in the xaaes config file, or you could just pass it on the command line in a terminal session (SDL_VIDEODRIVER=xbios ./openttd)

SDL_ATARI_EVENTRSDRIVER is not set, is it?

And the ScummVM issue is wierd as well, I would also say give it a try the same way and see what happens. If I have time I will build the latest ScummVM development version and post it this weekend, although it does take a good while to build a full version (6 to 7 hours or more).
