3) If you have any DMA-capable devices in the system, you need to flush the datacache at appropriate times to ensure that data gets moved out from CPU to main memory before the DMA device tries to access it.

The cache flush can essentially be seen as a mechanism that synchronizes the contents of the CPU's caches and the main RAM. If the 680x0 did snooping between I/D caches like on x86, then there would be no need for the synchronization step when writing self-modifying code.
