Yes, but XIMG is compressed, right?
That means we can't just change the image to another one of the same resolution/bitdepth - the replacement picture has to have a smaller or equal filesize to the built-in one.

If you wanted to reduce image size, what about changing it to 256 colours and keep it uncompressed? There are tools that save out 256col GIF as falcon native format (bitplanes+palette) that anyone can use easily. Such an image would use 320*240+1024=77824 bytes, I guess your XIMG is larger than this - so you would save up more space in the flash and keep a few users happy in one go ;)

Well just an idea.
