of course I did do a lot of experiments in this manner but with no success (or little success, 0.7 MB/s with direct wire connection I wouldn't call that).
after some hours I'm able to tell you're right, gateway is kind of killer to mintnet. on the other hand, the most important discovery was ftp server I used (pureftpd) participated on local LAN limitations quite well, too. So after replacing it with ProFTPD is the situation much better (1.3 MB/s up/down)
i'd be very interested to know what exactly is the problem with pureftpd because it seems it's very similar to that gateway problem (I've got nearly the same speed results).
btw, what upload/download speed you get with your ethernat?
