I didn't play many games but the following stand out:

* Although not that amazing technically, I really liked Goldrunner -- the first colour scroller I'd seen -- I just moved from the BBC B to an Atari ST. Also had voice effects as well as music. On the Beeb I only had either music or speech. Similarly liked Return to Genesis and Star-Ray parallax.

* Some game by Psygnosis (Barbarian? Obliterator?) had a track with fewer bytes on it than there should have been. That stimulated my interest in messing around with the WD1772

* Fractal mountains in Captain Blood. Wished they were animated!

* Enchanted Land (race-the-beam sprites + IIRC code to check overscan timings on the machine so hardscroll would work).

* Also I believe Wings of Death had some of the fastest sprite routines, as probably did Toki to be pretty well coded since it was by Mcoder, although I never had a look.

* NSP was impressive technically, but I didn't find it fun :-(

* Interphase (the first impressive 3D I'd seen, especially the gouraud dither shaded thing at the beginning)

* Starglider II : same code on both ST and Amiga. I was so curious I decided to disassemble it, and discovered that on the Amiga, the blitter was used to decode MFM and the atari compatible sectors.

I realized pretty quickly that I preferred demos to games...
