The docs stated, that parts of the s/w logic is still inside the hardware.
BUT:
Normally you use Susy for Sprite drawing . I dont think that there is s/w support in suzy anymore. But mikey might have some stuff inside... at least there are some bits unused/undocumented in the screen parameters section.
PS:
You must only change the color-indizes for sub-pixel drawing ...
