hi there lance,
i think sage covers this in an article over on his site:

unfortunately the section about the topic you're referring to hasn't yet been translated to english....but from what i read the lynx' display isn't supposed to actually display 480 physical columns being individually controllable.
i.e. its hardware is actually forced to only display 160 "virtual" r-g-b columns as already pointed out by you.
i might be wrong tho, takers?
