I dont have a LYNX, but I am 99% sure that is is exactly like you said. On the GBA its the same. And more to it: its not a feature of the consoles its a feature of the display, so every LCD has this "feature" as you already said, it is abused to get higer resolution chars even on modern TFT displays. :)
