If you have a larger palette, the gradient is smoother. I've seen this with 256 of 4096 colors on the TT030 vs. the same picture on a Falcon in 256 of 256k colors.
Also, I guess I'm not the only one, "Thus, truecolor can be used with any color depth (e.g. 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit...)", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truecolor
But then again, this is wikipedia, so who knows :-P
