In the times of my youth when I didn't believe something better would come up (as vasm), I've made private gnu-as version with lots of improvements -- including local labels, generic comments (last token on the line) etc... most of those things were just matter of configuration in some header file, some I had to code by myself... but it was a mess... vasm rulez hard.
