just a side note, you don't need vbcc for using its assembler.
i use gcc for C code and vasm for asm code, we've worked with Frank very hard to get a.out-mint object output into vasm :)
and side note #2: gnu-as can use also native motorola syntax, it's not perfect (i.e. missing local labels) but you can live with that.
