Yeah it's fast :) It's a nice peice of hardware which somehow has managed to gain an undeserved bad rep. I always wondered if that was down to the truly awful entry for it in ST internals which omitted things like the skew register! There are people out there who don't realise you can bit shift for free with it :)

I don't think you need to worry about the blitter locking out other DMA devices. According to the manual it will yield to another DMA device even in hog mode.

For timers I'd suggest using the blitter restart method mentioned in http://www.atari-forum.com/wiki/index.php/Blitter_manual.

If you're doing anything really time critical you can always disable the blitter when servicing an interrupt.
