hi bod! thanks for all the ideas =) indeed, the 8/8 colour splitting is an option.

the problem is that a hard 'split' on a scanline is off course not possible. spectrum, for instance, changes 1 colour from the ST palette every 4 and 16 cycles, respectively. so, it's more like palette 'smearing' *g*

so indeed the 8 colours on the foreground (constant) and 8 on the background (varying) seems like the only feasible way.. this allows the background to be reasonably colourful and at least gives -some- colours for the sprites.. the colours can be varied faster i guess, just like in photochrome: 2 palette colours could be changed every 20 cycles.
