Hey mate :)

I won't comment the stuff about the hurting etc. since I believe I shared my opinion about that in my last posting already.

However let's start with the competition thing instead. You say there is no competition? Well we had a lot of attempts for records lately, didn't we? This competition revealed two interesting things: First we got some impressive results, which nobody has ever dreamed of. Second the record race lead to a huge bunch of screens that looked very similar because otherwise they wouldn't have obeyed the rules of the compo. So you can easily see where competition leads to, it's the oldskool "I can do x (sprites, pixels, lines, polygons, …) more than you, blah" bullshit. Face it or not, there is no REAL competition anymore. People are coding for fun more or less. And remember we don't have thousands of people and hundreds of crews in our scene anymore. We are perhaps a few hundred active sceners most and I think the reasons for still being active are quite different for each of em.

Ok let's get to the ripped stuff. In the 80s and 90s we used ripped ZAKs or GFX to show we have successfully hacked a program. This was especially interesting since lots of prods had very nice protections at that time. So you could show your superior cracking skills this way. This surely doesn't apply anymore today since all musics have been ripped, most gfx are online etc. However I don't think it's a crime to use a good font, gfx or zak. If someone uses my stuff - which rarely happens :) - I would take it as a proof, that it's really good. You see my point? It's nothing I would get angry about, unless they try to make money out of it. Besides if I have to choose between either no demo or one with ripped gfx or zaks, I would chose the latter.

Well and for the 8 bit stuff. I wouldn't want to exchange my ST against an 800, fullstop. It's simply not my machine; I have no relationship to it. It's more or less the same with the falcon, it just doesn't amaze me like the ST(E). Especially since it doesn't like my development tools too much :), but that's a different topic.
