Yes, cache coherence would be a way, but i'm not sure whether Atari fell into that trap.
Since all harddisk- and disk-accesses are being performed through the DMA-chip
and there is no way to generally flush the cache (at least none i would know of), the
risk of corrupting data by not signalling the cache that the data has been updated is
pretty high. Since the MegaSTE doesn't seem to suffer from that problem, it seems
like the cache is at least marked dirty.
But like you said, it should be easy to find out ...
