In case anyone is interested, here is what I wrote to Lars:

Hi Lars,

I hope you are well. Thanks for the email, and good work on finding a stock of AY8930.

Stefan Lindberg contacted me a few months ago with a data sheet of the chip. It looks like a great device, with some fascinating possibilities. At the time Stefan also demonstrated some sound samples to me from the chip, and the default YM2149, and the sound appeared to be muffled. I made him suggestions for PCB modifications to address that, but I don't know if they were ever carried out.

One could perhaps 'piggy back' the AY8930 on top on the YM2149, and select the audio output between them, which would be truly 100% compatible.

I'm hesitant to have an AY3930 fitted to one of my Ataris. I rarely use them these days except for my live performances and compatibility testing, preferring the portability, nice screen and convenience of emulation on my laptop. Its a heck of alot easier for development too.

I'm curious to try some of the possibilities of the new device, but having looked into it earlier it would be a massive amount of work to rearchitect my tracker to support it fully. I could support some of the easier features in a lame way, but its not really what maxYMiser is about.

maxYMiser-wise the only support I'm realistically prepared to offer is ensuring that it doesn't spuriously trigger the extended mode.

If someone like Tao/Cream or Dark Angel/Aura started to release tunes with the new chip I would perhaps like to trade off with them in some friendly 'competing' releases. Then I would add support for my own private 1k driver and try to come up with some nice effects. I don't want to be alone in supporting it though.

When I included DMA support in my tracker maxYMiser I got really encouraging feedback, but also a few disturbing comments that it wasn't really true YM sound any longer, and I was giving too much support for STe rather than the base machine. I'm worried about this and also in any case the audience for a AY3930 tracker would be rather limited I think... and to speak the truth its not huge even for standard boxes.

So you would charge 20euro + shipping for the mod I guess? Thats pretty reasonable I think. I'm going to watch and see the scene reaction with great interest! I'm sure you will find buyers for the initial 8... I suggest though to offer a non solder option if possible, perhaps via the cartridge port - like the ZX spectrum guys do. I once had to unsolder a YM, and it was a real pig ;)
