Falcon as a games machine...
Posted by: FDR1980 Mar,03.2009-00:32

I guess this is for all those clever technical people who are upto speed with regards to the Falcon030's internal workings :D

I'm under the impression apart from the Blitter the Falcon has no GFX co-processors to help with its 2D presentations. And even this is relativley useless too?

So a few questions:-

1. What is the VIDEL capable of technically? Can it do any fancy parralax stuff, sprites etc...?
2. If not what is its main function and how have these effects been achieved in demos / games so far? Pure brute force of the 68030 along with a speedier BUS (compared to ST & A500)?
3. Realistically, what would you have liked the Falcon to have been? Taking into account hardware at the time and keeping the machine at the same costs? (For me, I'd have got rid of the old crap like ST sound hardware, got rid of the blitter, full 32 bit BUS & no ST RAM, DMA DSP access, 030 @32mhz, faster bus clock 25/32mhz?, VGA port as standard instead of Atari version...I could go on lol)

What do you think it would have been like if Atari had done it right and not tried to keep it ST compatiable?

Just a bit of fun and also very curious about the best computer I ever owned...and now regret ever selling :(
