you're right sqward, the connectors are the same but you know, SATA cable has the same connectors either (female), so I think this is OK.
on the other side, I was able to get running SATA -> PATA but not PATA -> SATA on the PC... it "nearly" worked so it's either damaged item and I need new one or it's badly described and it's SATA -> PATA as well and I need the correct one. argh.
