Try to go on step by step:
First try these in a PC:
1. PATA interface -> PATA/SATA converter -> SATA HDD
2. PATA interface -> PATA/SATA converter -> SATA/PATA converter -> PATA HDD
(3. SARA interface -> SATA/PATA converter -> PATA HDD)
This way you can try both of the converters if they function correctly. If they work OK in a PC, then you can try it with your Atari.
