Yes you can. MINT mentions something about it, but memory protection still works. At least I'm able to trigger protection faults when when touching memory that isn't mine.

I defenitely recommend it for coders, since you get instant notification (in most cases) of pointer errors and such stuff.

Another good reason to enable it when coding is to ensure that your production is compatible with it. If not, you're most probably A: doing something wrong or B: doing something nasty. In case of the latter, there are often clean - or cleaner - ways of doing it.
