EtherNEC timing, CPU, errors
Posted by: Crash Aug,23.2007-21:04

Greetings,

As I've mentioned before regarding my CT60, if I run the CPU at anything above 66mhz (with CTCM) there are network packet errors with the EtherNEC romport ethernet adapter. If I run at 66mhz, everything is fine.

I've been trying to determine if there is a way to solve this, and wrote to the author of the original driver. He says:

"These errors point to serious problems in receiving ethernet packets.
Basically what appears to happen is:
Packets come in faster than are being retrieved from the NE card.

You could argue that this shall happen less the faster the machine runs...
However the cartridge port (CP) must obey a fixed timing to allow "slow"
ROMs to be read reliablym as there is no hardware mechanism to adjust timing
to the device speed dynamically (forseen by Motorola but not implemented by
Atari for the CP).

Could be that the CP is timed even *slower* when CPU speed is higher.
Any documentation on that?

Could be measured using a Scope.

What I am looking for is some hardware jumper setting to set the CP speed in
relation to CPU speed."

I would appreciate any insights or information

Thanks!
