Unfortunately keyboard action is quite jerky since it is not possible to read more than one simultaneous keystroke in GEM.
Joysticks or joypads are supported trough special device drivers (js.xdd & joypad.xdd). This may appear confusing at first, but since this functionality is missing in the OS, this is the only way to read joysticks in a clean manner.
x128 looks for devices named /dev/js0 and /dev/js1, but the device drivers (above) installs /dev/js and /dev/joypadN. This means you'll have to add symbolic links named /dev/js0 and /dev/js1 to the joysticks you wish to use for x128.
