This is what you should be seeing on your boot screen:

Well NVDI is needed otherwise you'll get a crash because of the blitter, but you can leave Control Panel and whatever "etc" is off for now.

Gembench crashes "sometimes" when doing the FPU test, but not always.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that you can leave running that will tax the system. I'm sure there will be quite a few suggestions here soon though.

Bigger cooling fan, unlikely. RAM/DSP heatsink definately not. If you have fitted the CPU heatsink yourself, (IE it wasnt glued on by Rodolphe) then I would definately check the seating on that. I was getting crashes until I checked my heatsink and found it was mismounted (though this was on my last linux box ;-))
