I dont know but let me throw something in to get us started ;-)

The bus loading is a lot higher with 16bit than with 8bit colour, so maybe the CPU is having to spend a lot of time waiting which means its not running full pelt. You didnt say whether you are getting crashes below 90mhz in 8bit but I am assuming that you are not.

Do you have the most recent firmware?
