Hello,
Reencoding video files to a different format (and different size, and different bitrate) is a very lengthy task. mencoder from mplayer package does it very well (but I don't know if Didier put it in its mplayer port).
I do it frequently because I have a slow pc, and viewing hires video is choppy on my system, but reencoding takes much time, and on ct60, which is slower, it may take maybe a day to reencode a file.
