I find it strange that what effectively is a scaled up hobby project with minimal profit is treated like a fully grown business?
I'm assuming you are registered as a business and not selling these informally, otherwise how would they collect the tax in the first place?
Can you turn this back against them to some extent, get any exemptions, or claim something back, say on the materials used?
